Penang (“Pinang” in Malay) is named after the betel nut palm found all over the island. While chief attractions are located at the island (generally known as Penang) itself, the state of Penang is made up of Penang Island and a narrow strip of land on the mainland known as Seberang Perai.
Among foodies, Penang is a food paradise known for its laksa and char kway teow (fried rice noodles), alongside a variety of other local and international cuisines. Penang offers more than just food – Batu Ferringhi (the site of beautiful beaches, world-class resorts and bazaars), Kek Lok Si Temple which houses the Pagoda of Rama IV, bird sanctuary, butterfly farm and batik factory, just to name a few. Then walk the Canopy Walk at Penang Hill, a suspension bridge hanging 200 feet (about 61 metres) above the ground for a panoramic view of the island below and the mainland across.
